Fishing in greenwich CT for snappers?

what could i use to catch snappers, i know that i could use a snapper popper but i lost mine today while fishing and i was wondering if this ever happened again what i could use to catch them. would trout clay work.i went and i caught one,but what i did was lowered it by adding a 4 ounce weight and it sank it all the way to the bottom and i took it up kinda quick and all of a sudden like 5 of them just go after the lure. but i tried another and i lost that but i tried another one and just kept switching because if i did one more then once they would not go after it. so if this type of way attracts them maybe it will help you guys figure out what i could use to catch them, so what could i use?
