Caesar Augustus?

In which year did Augustus actually become Emperor? I know that there was not an actual throne or a position called that at the time, but what is the date given for when Octavian becomes the de facto monarch of Rome? Was it when he was given the title of Augustus, even though it gave him no more power than he actually had? Or was it later than that?
