German measure of volume 1 J?

o.k. so i have this beer stein that was given to me by my father. He received it when he was in the military and stationed in germany. On the top of the stein their is what looks like a line of where to fill it to, and it says 1 J. I want to know what that means and what the conversion would be in a volume i would understand.
